Fire Dartfish
Nemateleotris magnifica
Its nickname comes from its blazing red tail, but the flag-like fin on its back is the real showpiece — the fish waves it constantly to send messages to its neighbors.

How to spot
A slim, elongated body with one very tall, thin first dorsal fin that stands up like a little flag. The white-yellow front and flame-colored tail make it easy to tell apart from other small reef fish.
True colors
Pale white to soft yellow in front, blending through a warm pink-orange middle into fiery red-orange at the tail; the tall first dorsal fin is pale yellow. Never one flat color — the fade is its trademark.
